Remembering, stitching, and storytelling together

In this queer textile workshop, participants explore how personal memories, lived experiences, and collective histories are inscribed in textiles. Together, they will approach the "AIDS Memorial Quilt No. 22" from the Netherlands – a piece of living remembrance culture – and draw inspiration from its history. Even if they are guided by queer remembrance culture, everyone is welcome.

Participants will work with used fabrics, worn garments, and personal materials. The focus is not on technical perfection or craftsmanship, but rather on the gesture:

conscious patching, mindful repair, and the sharing of stories. The textile techniques will be explained in an introductory manner – no prior knowledge is necessary.

Participants are invited to bring their own fabrics that have meaning for them: a T-shirt, a piece of curtain, a shirt that bears a story. Together, they will create a space for caring, creative work, remembrance, and exchange.

The workshop will be held in German and English and is aimed at people aged 16 and over, regardless of previous experience. Materials will be provided.

If the participation fee is a hurdle for you, please contact m.roemer@smb.spk-berlin.de – we will find a solution together.
