Expert guided tour with Dr. Franziska Windt, SPSG
The famous painting "Embarkation to Cythera" shows young couples on a shore in a summer landscape. They are setting off for the island of love, Cythera - or are they perhaps just leaving it?
Dr. Franziska Windt presents Antoine Watteau's enigmatic masterpiece and works by other artists and encourages reflection: Why did these images of nature, tenderness and lightness fascinate audiences in the 18th century? And what about them still appeals to us today?
The so-called "gallant parties" created by Watteau and his contemporaries became a new genre of painting, showing a world beyond rigid social rules. King Frederick II was also enthusiastic about these works and collected them with great passion.
Dr. Franziska Windt is the academic curator of the collection. During the one-hour tour, she will guide you through selected living rooms and halls. Afterwards, she will be available for questions and discussions.
