In 1984, Marcus Hugk, a young punk, emigrated from the GDR to West Berlin. Even across the Wall, he maintained close contact with his friends from the subculture in East Berlin. They provided him with information about concerts, bands, and everything important to the scene. This is how "Swoop" was born: a fanzine about punk culture in the GDR, featuring interviews, reviews, and concert reports.
Thanks to several informants, the GDR's State Security Service was always closely informed about Hugk's work during this time. They compiled their information in the "Fanzine" Operational Procedure (OV). The secret police viewed the contact between the punks in East and West as so-called unlawful contact and viewed the fanzine itself as detrimental to the interests of the GDR.
Visitors to the exhibition "Insight into the Secret" have recently been able to read the unabridged and largely unanonymized OV "Fanzine" in the sample files collection of the Stasi Records Archive.
On March 24, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., Marcus Hugk will speak about the OV “Fanzine,” the history of the “Swoop,” and his experiences with accessing the files.
