More than three decades after German reunification, stereotypes about women from East and West Germany persist. The West German woman is seen as either a "housewife" or an ambitious career woman, while the East German woman is seen as a tough coal mining worker - or a bad mother because she sends her children to daycare early.

While the West German woman is gender-neutral, the East German woman is said to have no use for the concept. Sometimes she is seen as the winner of reunification, sometimes as its biggest loser.

There seems to be one thing in common: within their "own" group they are all the same, but compared to the other part of Germany they are completely different. But where do these stereotypes come from - and what is really true?
