The Wolf-Ferrari Ensemble was founded in 1998 by Wolfram Thorau on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of the late romantic composer Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1872–1948). In a multi-part chamber music cycle, the ensemble devoted itself to the chamber music works of the German-Italian namesake, who is primarily known as an opera composer, and performed a large number of these works, which are rarely played today.

The combination of forgotten compositions with well-known masterpieces of romantic chamber music marked the beginning of a tradition of thematic concert programs that continue to surprise audiences with unusual combinations of works. The young ensemble performs in changing line-ups - mostly as a string quartet with pianist, but also in larger formations up to a chamber orchestra.
