Georg Friedrich Handel's "Brockes Passion"
In the early 18th century, the influential German poet and Hamburg councilor Barthold Heinrich Brockes revived the tradition of passion oratorios: The passion poem "Jesus, martyred and dying for the sins of the world" that he published in 1712 became the textual basis for the "Brockes Passion" composed by Georg Friedrich Handel.
The work, which was first performed in the spring of 1719 in the refectory of the Hamburg Cathedral, does not set a biblical text to music, but rather uses free text poetry to reflect on the biblical passion events as reported in the Gospels in poetic meditation. Brockes' poetry inspired many German Baroque composers (including G. Ph. Telemann) to write their own passion oratorios, and even J. S. Bach included passages from Brockes' poetry in his St. John Passion.
