STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT THE MIRROR WHEN YOUR FACE IS CROOKED! Ukrainian author Nikolai Gogol used this meaningful sentence as the motto for his play “The Inspector General”.
For almost 200 years, this grotesque story has been considered a classic of Eastern European theater history, always relevant, and since the West is also full of cronyism, lobbying and obsession with power, Gogol hits us right in the heart too:
The mayor of a small Russian town with a corrupt administration (Frank Kessler) receives an urgent warning that an inspector will shortly be checking his machinations incognito. Full of panic, he rushes to instruct his wife (Krista Birkner) and daughter (Helen Barke) as well as all officials (Oliver Seidel and Steffen Mellies) accordingly.
When an unknown traveler and his subordinate actually arrive in town, the strange comedy of errors and confusion takes its course - of course with an unexpected ending.
The Schlosspark Theater is performing the new and fresh version of the play by John von Düffel.
The Inspector General Comedy by Nikolaj Gogol, adapted by John von Düffel; based on a rough translation by Natascha Görde
