This year, the traditional choir concert in the Marienfelde village church on Christmas Eve will feature a German premiere: "Julevangeliet" (The Christmas Gospel) by the Swedish composer Mikael Carlsson from 2017.

Mikael Carlsson was commissioned by the Swedish church to compose "Julevangeliet" (The Christmas Gospel), a 12-movement suite for string quartet, choir and reciter.

The piece was inspired by the traditional English Nine Lessons and Carols and expands the traditional reading from Luke 2:1-20 into a longer, approximately 40-minute work with accompanying scripture readings combined with four-part motets.

The Nativity Story:

The piece tells the story of the birth of Jesus as described in Luke 2:1-20, with the scripture readings serving as the basis for the music.

Redemption and salvation: The Christmas Gospel narrative highlights the importance of the birth of Jesus as a means of redemption and salvation for humanity and emphasizes God's divine plan.

Joy and celebration: The music is marked by a sense of joy and celebration, reflecting the festive atmosphere of Christmas and the angels' announcement of the birth of Jesus to the shepherds (Luke 2:13-14).

By combining scripture readings and music, Mikael Carlsson's "Julevangeliet" brings the biblical narrative to life, emphasizes the core themes of the Christmas story and invites listeners to reflect on the meaning of the birth of Jesus for their own lives.

Judith Kamphues, reciter; Thurid Perlich and Claudia Zohm, violins; N.N. viola; Juliane Herzig, cello; Marienfelde choir; conductor: David Menge
