Cao Zai Fei

The first solo exhibition of Chinese artist Cao Zai Fei in Europe presents a selection of paintings from recent years as well as videos of his performance art.

Cao Zai Fei's art is dedicated to the profound changes in Chinese society and deals intensively with current, often sensitive issues.

His small-format paintings appear surreal at first glance, but in reality they capture fleeting moments and reflect reality in all its facets. The combination of surreal messages and realistic depictions creates narratives that are reminiscent of short fables and sketches.

It is striking that Cao Zai Fei rarely shows faces in his works. Instead, he concentrates on individual body parts or people who can be seen from behind. Depictions of flesh also frequently appear, which for the artist symbolises desire, greed and everyday oppression.

In his performances, he recites classical poetry in public, questioning the values of modern society, e.g. with love poems at the ‘marriage market’ in Shanghai.

His art encourages people to reflect on the difficult choice of being a piece of meat or the knife. In this sombre portrayal, his works convey both despair and hope.

The exhibition will be accompanied by the catalogue ‘Cao Zai Fei’.
