The cultural festival on homelessness

Homelessness and housing shortages are increasing rapidly in Berlin. The wider the circles that are potentially threatened, the more attention is paid and fear increases: people quickly look away, push things away - during the European Championships, people were even systematically evicted and cleared out of public places.

HINSCHAUEN is now putting homelessness and housing insecurity on the stage for two weeks, in central places of public life.

The actors are those affected themselves: We hear their voices in the OPEN-AIR AUDIO INSTALLATION HINSCHAUEN (sound artist Peter Breitenbach and director Martin Heesch) and their sounds at a FESTIVAL OF BERLIN STREET MUSICIANS, the visitors see their everyday life in the OPEN-AIR PHOTO EXHIBITION ONE WISH by the artist Debora Ruppert (most recently: HOME STREET HOME, German Bundestag, 2023) and everyone learns from their experiences in READING AND CONVERSATION WITH WRITER RICHARD BROX, perhaps Germany's most prominent ex-homeless person (most recently GERMANY WITHOUT A ROOF, Rowohlt 2023).

The long-time artistic director of the Greiz Theaterherbst, Martin Heesch, is the initiator of the festival. He himself is developing the THEATER WORK HALTESTELLE from staged experiences with young people from “Straßenkinder e.V.” and those affected who are artistically active in the association “Unter Druck – Kultur von der Straße”.

The indispensable actors on the fringes of the scene of homelessness and housinglessness also have their say: initiatives, social workers, authors, politicians (the patron is Martin Schaefer, Mayor of Lichtenberg) present their approaches in discussions, with the question:

How can the viewers’ gaze be transformed into concrete impulses for action?

The cultural festival is aimed at passers-by and those interested in culture, at young and old - the notorious RIXDORFER PUPPENBÜHNE will contribute a cross-generational harlequinade with HOMELESS KASPER. HINSCHAUEN brings together:

Homeless and housingless people, ex-affected people and all the many for whom an abstract danger lurks in the housing shortage. A stage is open for spontaneous positions.

The program is daily from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., on Caligariplatz between Prenzlauer Berg and Weißensee from August 28th to September 1st, 2024, on the square in front of the Lichtenberg train station from September 4th to 8th, 2024.
