Josephine and Louisa flee from internment in France, Thérèse escapes the harsh conditions on her family's farm and goes to Berlin as a volunteer labourer. On the way there, the three get to know each other and develop a bond that helps them survive. In Germany, they meet Hilda from Berlin, with whom they build a relationship between solidarity and mistrust.
