Born in Rendsburg, Jochen Brunow studied German and journalism in Berlin and graduated with a video film Recht hat der Brecht!? (Is Brecht right?). He worked as a film critic for Der Abend and tip and from 1980 to 1982 he published the film magazine Filme – Altes und Neues vom Kino together with three colleagues.


He subsequently wrote screenplays for the feature films Berlin Chamissoplatz (1980) and System ohne Schatten (1983), among others. For television, for example, episodes were created for the ZDF crime series Beckmann und Markowski, as well as for Bella Block and Kommissarin Lucas. He also wrote screenplays for the television films Klassentreffen (Sat.1, 2001), Der Mann und das Mädchen (DRS, 2004) and Der Einsturz Sat.1 (2010).

Brunow is one of the founders of the professional association of screenwriters, VDD, which was founded in 1987. He taught screenwriting at various universities and academies. From 2007 to 2017, Brunow headed the Screenwriting Academy of the German Film and Television Academy Berlin.

In addition to screenplays, he also writes essays and radio features and edited the film and screenwriting almanac Scenario, 10 editions of which have been published. Brunow is a member of the German Film Academy.
