Starting school over time

On the free admission Museum Sunday, families can learn about everyday school life in the imperial era and share their first day of school photos with others!

The new school year will soon begin in Berlin too - for some for the first time, for others perhaps for the last time, and still others have long since finished school. A blackboard, original school desks and a teaching materials cabinet from around 1900 show how childhood and school have changed in Berlin in our large permanent exhibition BerlinZEIT.

  • When was the first Berlin school founded?
  • What did girls learn, what did boys learn?
  • What did the classes look like?

You can find out this and more here.

The collection of the Berlin City Museum includes numerous school enrollment photos from the past and present. They show Berliners born here and those who have moved here on their first day of school. On Museum Sunday, you and the whole family can upload your own photos. This way, your personal story becomes part of the shared culture of remembrance in the city.
