Special presentation of a Berlin private collection on the 200th anniversary of Prince Carl’s acquisition of Glienicke

May 1, 2024 marks the two hundredth anniversary of Prince Carl of Prussia (1801-1883) taking possession of the Glienicke estate. A small presentation in the second half of the year will now focus on life in Glienicke.

The core of the exhibition is made up of exhibits by the Berlin private collector Bernd Schmidt, supplemented by a few selected pieces from the holdings of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg (SPSG). The selection of objects condenses the permanent presentation shown in Glienicke.

As a young man, Carl acquired the property and had the manor house converted into a palace based on designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The prince also paid great attention to the garden, originally designed by Peter Joseph Lenné. Until the end of his life, Glienicke, the summer residence and place of longing, held a special place in the life of the prince's family.

The content of the presentation is, on the one hand, the world of Prince Carl, for example represented by a magnificent certificate from the Order of St. John, of which the prince is the Lord Master, or a selection of books about his travels.

His wife Princess Marie, née Princess of Saxe-Weimar (1808-1877), also spends many of her summers in Glienicke. Her interest in medicine is evidenced by books on medicine dedicated to her; a graphic shows the family of five in the garden.

Marie and Carl receive numerous prominent guests in the palace. Registration books and invitation cards provide evidence of the culture of visits and celebrations in Glienicke. A particularly welcome visitor is Carl's older sister Charlotte (1798-1860), later known as Alexandra Feodorovna as Tsarina of Russia.

The siblings maintain an intensive correspondence, some examples of which are on display. And gifts from the sister, such as the fountain sculpture of the "Laitière" in the garden, also testify to the intensive exchange.
