a Rothschild Variation

Who are you when everyone is talking? The history of the Jewish Rothschild family has been overwritten by conspiracy myths and hate propaganda for centuries. Based on research and autobiographies, a different facet is now being brought to the stage: Fictional but close to the facts, the choreographed theater evening tells of responsibility, discord and solidarity across generations: a European family saga.

The focus is on four siblings, each of whom, in their own way, longs to escape from the stories that people have told of them and their family. They flee into nature, art or jazz, engage in politics, resist and try to hold together an internally torn family. Past and present are linked in their family stories: from emancipation from the Frankfurt ghetto to prosperous prosperity to the fight for survival against the will to destroy from outside.

As a game within a game, the evening takes up the last 200 years of the family in a kind of Jewish Buddenbrooks variant, reflecting responsibility, discord and solidarity across generations, but also dissecting the view of an outside world that has long since formed its opinion and wants to see its own explanatory patterns confirmed rather than individuals behind the name Rothschild.
