Works by J.S. Bach, J.P. Sweelink, G. Ligeti & V. Kujala

Susanne Kujala is a German concert organist living in Finland. Her repertoire ranges from the oldest surviving organ music to music of the 21st century. Collaboration with composers is an essential part of her artistic work.


She has premiered numerous works, including over 60 solo and chamber music works, five concertos and several works for microtonal organ (on the Fokker organ in 31-TET in the Muziekgebouw aan t’IJ Amsterdam and on the organ of St. Martin in Kassel with quarter-tone manual).

Her premiered compositions include works by Moritz Eggert, Fabien Lévy, Joachim F. W. Schneider, Jukka Tiensuu and Lotta Wennäkoski, as well as the concerto for organ and big band Gandai by Markus Fagerudd together with the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra conducted by Jukka Linkola.

In May 2024, she premiered Joy for organ and orchestra by Matthew Whittall as a soloist with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Nicholas Collon.

Her international concert activities have taken her to the Paris Philharmonie, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Ultima Oslo Festival, the Toulouse Les Orgues Festival and the Auditorio de Música Madrid, among others.

Together with KMD Eckhard Manz, she was artistic director of BRANDNEU Kassel 2022, a festival of 23 concerts and numerous world premieres, and a jury member of the Kaija Saariaho Organ Composition Competition.

Susanne Kujala initially studied accordion and accompaniment for artistic schools at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin from 1996 to 1999. After moving to Finland, she studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and completed her Master of Music in organ in 2006.

In autumn 2013, she completed her doctorate in music at the Sibelius Academy of the Helsinki University of the Arts with a thesis on “The organ – as an instrument for new music”.

Susanne Kujala has been teaching organ literature and the history of organ art at the Sibelius Academy of the Helsinki University of the Arts since 2009.

She is currently working as a freelance artist on the basis of a two-year artist scholarship from the Finnish Kone Foundation.
