Like hardly any other painter, Frans Hals defies common conventions in his works and brings groundbreaking impulses with his spontaneous, relaxed painting style, which ultimately made him a pioneer of modernism in the 19th century.

The people in Hals' pictures appear authentic, unadulterated and unpretentious - regardless of whether he is portraying the wealthy elite of Haarlem or depicting social outsiders in his genre pieces.
Katja Kleinert and Erik Eising, curators of the exhibition and specialists in Dutch painting, introduce the virtuoso work of this unusually innovative artist.
