Collectors and Their Works
The starting point of Biographies of Modernism. Collectors and their works is provenance research at the Brücke Museum. The exhibition shifts the focus from the origin stories of the works of art to the biographies of their former owners.
Eight Jewish collectors who supported and promoted the Brücke artists are presented.
They include the art historian Rosa Schapire, the writer Max Osborn, the collector Rosy Fischer, the salonnière Elsa Glaser, the economist Hans Heymann and his brother, the writer Walther Heymann, the banker Hugo Simon and the art dealer Victor Wallerstein.
Biographies of Modernism wants to remember these personalities and honor their commitment to the Brücke artists and German modernism.
Using works of art, documentary materials and film interviews with descendants and scientists, the exhibition traces their life paths.
The stages of the works of art that were once in their possession are also addressed.
A contemporary artistic approach is provided by a mural created especially for the exhibition by the artist Sophie von Hellermann.
