Anne-Marie Mille, an aging actress, reflects on her life. She tells of a dreary youth in the French provinces, of childlike admiration for the actors in her hometown and the happiness of being hired as an actress at a suburban Paris theater.
“On stage I was sometimes Anne-Marie the Beauty.” She was happy here, but there was no great success. She envies her late friend and colleague Gigi, who always got bigger roles, had famous lovers, and even made it to the movies. Meanwhile, Anne-Maries is bored with her husband and their son is getting on her nerves. But Anne-Marie outlived Gigi and most of her companions. Now she reflects on the encounters throughout her life and re-evaluates them.
With her wistful and bizarre monologue, written expressly for an actor, Yasmina Reza paints a graceful portrait of an aging woman.
A look back at a life between stage and reality, wishful thinking and reality, illusion and depression.
