Voyage cantabile – Gesang zwischen Osten und Westen im Andenken an Bunya Koh

The HoHaiYan Artists' Association for the Promotion of Music and Performing Arts from Taiwan invites you to the concert FORMOSA RONDO. Bunya Koh (also known as Jiang Wen-Yeh, 1910-1984) was born in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation and received his education in Japan, where he also gained his artistic reputation.

He lived in China from 1937. Koh was the first Taiwanese composer to come into contact with Western music. He gained international recognition through his successes in the art competitions at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.

At that time, the development of new music was already in full swing. His connections to the Western music scene often included important organizations of the time, in particular the International Society for New Music - German Section.

After the Chinese Civil War, relations between the People's Republic of China and Taiwan became difficult, which is why Bunya Koh was forgotten in his home country for forty years from 1949. It was not until the 1990s that his importance was recognized again.

The first part of the concert will depict the musical atmosphere of the 1930s to 1940s in East Asia with music and stories.

The second part will feature a contrasting selection of works by contemporary Taiwanese composers from different generations who were trained in Germany and represent current developments.

These include Shui-Long Ma (1939-2015), Deh-Ho Lai (*1943), Hwang-Long Pan (*1945), Nan-Chang Chien (*1948), Tsung-Jen Hsieh (*1981) and Wie-En Hsu (*1980), who will even premiere a work.
