Grammy-nominated Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca has released a series of solo albums for more than 20 years, between tours with the legendary Buena Vista Social Club and later with singer Omara Portuondo. He is the artistic director of the jazz festival in Havana and is considered one of the most important representatives of Afro-Cuban jazz!

Roberto - SOLO - FONSECA presents the music and the art
of a personal, intimate story.

When it comes to the pianist Roberto Fonseca, there is hardly any need for an introduction. Virtuoso, successor to Rubén Gonzalez, music producer for Ibrahim Ferrer, preferred pianist of Cuban singer Omara Portuondo - Fonseca has been touring the world with his band for years, delighting audiences with the music from his seven albums.

In November 2013, the Cuban artist presented a unique intimate show to the Parisian audience for the first time: he fused elements of music, poetry, percussion and improvised acting - fascinating, captivating and ultimately entertaining.

The response to the one-man performance was so positive that Fonseca planned a series of similar performances throughout Europe for 2014 and beyond. roberto SOLO fonseca - a mixture of the artist's favorite styles: jazz, classical, pop and world music.

Candles, a fridge and a hat are just some of the many props in the show. Others include a table, a couch, a wine glass, flowers in a jar and a radio. Although all these props may seem random at first glance, they have a special meaning in the context of Fonseca's personal history and musical philosophy.

"I identify with each element differently, but always in a very personal way," he explains. "The radio represents the time I spent with my brothers when we were younger, trying to learn new music and get creative inspiration. The hat reminds me of my grandfather. The flowers are a symbol of spirituality. The table, the couch and the wine glass represent stability. Overall, the stage is like a day in my house. The presentation may seem unusual at first, says Fonseca, but he is confident that the audience will trust him enough to go on the journey with him.

However, a solo performance with a piano is a completely different experience than with a band, both for the artist and for the audience.

It's much more intimate and spiritual. I think this intimate, spiritual experience is what roberto SOLO fonseca is all about."

At Babylon, we can therefore expect a solo performance from Fonseca, as he has been doing regularly since 2013. He fuses elements of music, poetry, percussion and improvised acting - fascinating, captivating and ultimately very entertaining.
