Stephan Hippe

The multimedia homage to the great French chansonnier and actor Charles Aznavour celebrated its premiere at the Hamburg Chamber Opera 2021 and has been seen there regularly since then. As usual, the Francophile singer and musician Stephan Hippe tells the story in an opulent manner with original sounds, pictures, films and of course lots of music by Charles Aznavour.

A story larger than life. “A chanson by Aznavour is like a hug.”

“I stand on the shoulders of a 1.61 m tall giant.”

This sentence begins the new theater documentary by the Francophile Hamburg singer and musician Stephan Hippe, who is the great chansonnier Charles Aznavour honors musically.

He explores many questions:

Who was the boy who answered to the unpronounceable name Shahnourh Vaghinag Aznavourian?

How did little Charles become great Aznavour? Who were his friends, his enemies, his accomplices? Too many questions for one (theatre) evening?

Not if you know Stephan Hippe's multimedia stage documentaries. “CHARLES and how he saw the world” is a musical biography of the “Nouvelle Vague” of chansons, with the most beautiful songs, stories and unique virtual duets by and with Charles Aznavour.

Stephan Hippe has lovingly constructed the image and sound, arranged it orchestrally and respectfully dusted off the text, with many new adaptations. For his 90th birthday, on May 22, 2014, Charles Aznavour authorized the German translation of his chanson “Sa Jeunesse” made by the Hamburg singer.

The production will travel nationwide for Charles Aznavour's 100th birthday this year.

His program is a stirring homage full of life, love, suffering and surprising encounters with musical greats of the time such as Gilbert Becaud, Jacques Brel, Dalida, Edith Piaf and Charles Trenet.
