Master of the Miniature: Piano Works by Franz Schubert

Franz Schubert was a master of the miniature: in addition to his large-scale piano sonatas, he composed several hundred ländlers, waltzes, minuets, and other individual movements. These short pieces reveal the essence of his musical language perhaps more immediately than many other works.

For his solo recital, Kristian Bezuidenhout has selected a number of these rarely heard gems —including Schubert’s earliest surviving piano piece, a Fantasy written at the age of 14, and an Allegretto movement composed a few months before his death— juxtaposing them with the E flat–major Sonata D 568, all performed on a historic pianoforte.
