A walk through the Georgen Parochial Cemetery I

An enchanted, timeless place in the middle of the city noise, this is how visitors can experience the Georgen Parochial Cemetery on Greifswalder Straße. This was the first burial place of the Georgengemeinde outside of what was then the city wall, where vineyards had previously been located.

From magnificent houses for the dead to anonymous urn burials, the change in burial culture from the beginning of the 19th century to the present can be seen in this place.

Nature had largely reclaimed the cemetery after it was closed down by the East Berlin authorities in 1970. Burials have been taking place here again since 1991.

There are reports about Berlin personalities who were buried here in mostly elaborate, picturesque resting places, as well as today's attempts at alternative uses of the cemetery grounds.
After the tour, you can visit the small café “Nonna” right next to the cemetery entrance.
