Workshop exhibition on the redesign of the Spandau St. Nikolai Church in 1838/39

To put it briefly: No, it's not all Schinkel. One person alone couldn't have done anything. But let's start from the beginning: In 1837, Spandau's St. Nikolai Church was in a pitiful condition. Only a thorough restoration of the Gothic building could prevent the impending demolition.

Especially King Friedrich Wilhelm III. (1770-1840) and the Prussian Ober-Bau-Deputation headed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) wanted a stylistic re-Gothicization of the church. Construction work began in the fall of 1838 and was completed on November 1, 1839, on the 300th anniversary of the Brandenburg Reformation. The 185-year-old, handwritten construction diary is preserved in the archives of the St. Nikolai community and reports on it in detail.

In 2020 it was decided to use the Corona time and to decipher the journal about the management of the construction of the St. Nicolai Church in Spandow from the years 1838/39. It consists of two handwritten volumes with a total of 256 pages. Up to 15 people took part in this digital citizen science project (keyword: citizen science). The text was fascinating, as it offers a journey into the first half of the 19th century.

What had begun as a transcription project of archival material was then to be presented.

In the meantime, the citizen science team had long since grown beyond pure text transmission. In June 2023 the workshop exhibition Alles Schinkel? opened in front of a large audience.

Much of the content has since been published on the Spandovia Sacra blog. And since the exhibition generated a lot of interest and we still have questions about it, we decided, Alles Schinkel? to be shown again in 2024 with some additions.
