Burghart Klaußner & Band swings Charles Trenet
“La Mer, one of the most beautiful songs in the world,” Burghart Klaußner scribbled on a sandwich bag during a train ride with the Mediterranean in front of his eyes. Klaußner talks about the rich life of the poet Charles Trenet and he sings his feather-light chansons. As a singer, Klaussner is certainly a discovery for many.

Charles Trenet wrote wonderfully simple chansons and made them popular with the swing of the 1930s. Without ever becoming corny, he gave a melody to simple, obvious things: the sea, the rain, love, "gentle France, the country of my childhood."
People loved him for it, even after the Gestapo got hold of him and the rather timid Charles Trenet was dragged into the game of power and through the mud. His homosexuality and the rumor that he was a Jew made him vulnerable to blackmail. Since Trenet also sang in front of the occupiers, he was considered by some to be a collaborator.
Without a doubt, Charles Trenet was a great artist, to whom Burghart Klaußner pays homage with this program by telling and singing.
