Theater Mirakulum

More than just a puppet show

Stories are told at Theater Mirakulum with puppets, marionettes, or just shadows. And not just for kids.

Since 1991, Theater Mirakulum has made its home in the former no-man's land on Bernauer Straße. "Mirakulum" means "wonder" in Latin and the little theatre wants to create a sense of wonder for its audiences. No easy task, but with the new and long-standing productions, the theatre garners enthusiastic responses from audiences of all ages, including children, parents, and grandparents.

On a puppet stage, hand puppeteers tell vivid tales including Peter and the Wolf for ages 4 to 10 and Peppi the Duck for children 3 and older. Fairy tales, fables, shows, or just everyday stories are all on the agenda. For adults, Goethe's Faust gets the shadow puppet treatment. After all, who ever said that puppet theatre was just for kids?

All-round puppeteer

Thomas Mierau is the director of the theatre and all-round puppeteer, serving as director, writer, decorator, and tour guide. Mierau knows exactly how to offer an authentic puppet show to children and adults alike.

His approach is to create a complete work of art for each piece, with him serving as the solo puppeteer. This means that Mierau is the voice behind all of the puppets and uses them to tell stories he has devised himself.

And he not only delights children ages three and up, but also many adults, including the press and professionals. Mierau has staged more than 20 pieces, but not just with hand puppets, but also with marionettes and shadow puppets.

The venue

No more fitting venue could have been chosen: Theater Mirakulum is located in an former marionette workshop right in the middle of Berlin. The building was extensively modernised in 2002. The theatre has 75 seats, making it easy to achieve a cosy atmosphere for all.

Workshops, guided tours, guest performers

The Mirakulum team offers even more than its own original pieces, such as:

  • workshops
  • private lessons
  • guided tours
  • puppet displays
  • and guest performances of other puppet theatres
  • and a café-bar for snacks and drinks
