Ampelmann Shop
Original from Berlin
The Ampelmann Berlin shops have become an integral part of the capital. With a wide variety of different souvenirs, they inspire both visitors and Berliners.
AMPELMANN now offers over 600 products centred around the iconic red and green Ampelmännchen - from classic designs to trendy Berlin motifs and playful children's items: T-shirts, umbrellas, mugs, gummy bears, pendants, tea bags, noodles, bags, footballs, ... .
You are sure to take home a beautiful and recognisable souvenir from Berlin. And at the flag store on Unter den Linden, you can enjoy coffee at fair prices. Incidentally, this is also where the first traffic lights with the adorable Ampelmännchen were installed.
How did the Ampelmännchen actually come about?
On 13 October 1961, traffic psychologist Karl Peglau presented his proposals for pedestrian traffic lights, including the "Ost-Ampelmännchen". As pedestrian traffic lights had not really been noticed by people for a long time, Peglau deliberately designed the figures to be "cute" and functional in order to inspire sympathy and trust. He decided that the hat and the plump figure would improve visibility and safety. He owed the hat shape to the illustrator Anneliese Wegner.
In the years after reunification, the Ampelmännchen became cult figures. Originally intended as functional symbols for pedestrian safety, they remained an important part of road traffic even after reunification.
And today?
Today, AMPELMANN is a Berlin brand that stands for creativity and change. Founded by Markus Heckhausen, it has become a symbol of the city and places great emphasis on aesthetic, practical and sustainable products that are manufactured in Germany. The brand's philosophy includes the use of green electricity and environmentally friendly materials.
You can browse, get information and discover lots of great products and gift ideas in six shops that are open seven days a week. The Flagship Store is the largest shop and is located Unter den Linden 35 in the immediate vicinity of the Brandenburg Gate. You can also enjoy a cosy coffee here.
