Sammlung Hoffmann

A private art collection opens its doors

A private art collection set over two floors in a former factory building in the Sophie-Gips complex: Erika and Rolf Hoffmann have lived and worked here surrounded by the works of art they have been collecting for 40 years - and they've been opening their doors to the public since 1997. Since the death of her husband in 2001, Erika Hoffmann has continued to welcome people into her home and workspace every Saturday. Guided tours are offered by prior arrangement. The collection features contemporary works of art in a range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography and video. Once a year, in July, Erika Hoffmann changes things around. Some of the works of art are put back into storage, while others are simply moved to another room. Works from the depot are joined by relevant new acquisitions. A tour of the Hoffmann Collection is a very special cultural experience. A guide accompanies visitors through the rooms. But instead of providing a lecture, he encourages discussion. The paintings are not displayed as they would be in a museum, i.e. with information panels. The aim is to offer an insight into living with art on a day-to-day basis.
