Christmas Market in Berlin on 3 December 2023
Far away from the hustle and bustle: The Weihnachtsmarkt um die Grunewald Kirche is cosy and family-oriented, an occasion for the neighbourhood to meet to get in the mood for Christmas.
Since 1976, families from the villa district in Grunewald have been coming to the Grunewald Church on the first Sunday of Advent. Around the church, 60 stands of non-profit organisations invite you to browse and purchase items at the idyllic Christmas market, providing you with a great opportunity to buy that special Christmas present or souvenir.
The proceeds also go to charitable causes.
The striking triangular mulled wine stands are the market’s trademark. They can be found in the corners of the Christmas market. You won’t get just any old mulled wine here, but a particularly tasty one according to the traditional Grunewald recipe.
You can also warm up with waffles and crêpes or with coffee and cake in the church rooms.
A particular highlight for the little ones is the Christmas play with puppets. They can get creative by painting and doing handicrafts and make their own gifts for different members of the family.
Also Mrs. Holle, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella and other fairy tale characters come to visit. As darkness falls, a historically dressed night watchman accompanies the visitors to the bus.
The Grunewald Church has existed since the beginning of the 20th century and is the central point of the villa district. With its early Gothic design, a visit to the church is definitely worthwhile. Because of its good acoustics, it often serves as a recording studio, and renowned orchestras such as the Philharmonic have recorded here. And on the first Advent you can sing along to the concert together.
Ice skating at the Horst-Dohm ice skating rink provides great fun for the whole family. If you don’t have your skates with you, you can hire a pair.
Make the most of your visit to the Weihnachtsmarkt um die Grunewald Kirche and go for a long walk through the villa district of Grunewald. Today the magnificent villas often house embassies and consulates. Others are of historical importance such as Walter Rathenau’s house. The Gleis 17 memorial at Grunewald railway station, from where over 50,000 German Jews were deported to labour and concentration camps, commemorates the dark sides of Berlin’s history.
