Was there Pop Art in the GDR? Officially, Pop Art was frowned upon there because of its orientation towards the capitalist, western world of goods. Nevertheless, the formal language of the mass media and pop culture also found its way into art in the socialist states.
The way in which this happened is made clear in the exhibition "Zerreißprobe" (Test of Tensile Strength) with the works of Willi Sitte, a state artist celebrated in the GDR.
The art historian and expert on 20th century art, Eckhart Gillen, discusses how and whether Sitte's expressive visual language, often oriented towards the mass media, could be reconciled with the political guidelines of the GDR government.
