When you least expect it

The works of Karoline Kroiss in her new exhibition reveal a contemplative calm that draws the eye to the inner workings of her figures.

The creation of Karoline Kroiss's images resembles an inner monologue.

Her approach is classic, with subjects such as portraits, still lifes and landscapes. She feels particularly comfortable when she paints people she can ‘explore’ through her creative process.

Her models often bear traits of the artist herself – a prerequisite for exploring her own world and the discoveries in it.

An early self-portrait of her showing three rubber ducks attracted a lot of attention at an art fair and left several potential buyers empty-handed, as it sold quickly. Kroiss commented on this with a twinkle in her eye:

At the time, I had no idea that I would have three children."

Her current works often focus on people from her immediate environment, such as her daughter Karli or close friends. Kroiss creates calm, contemplative moments in which the women depicted are lost in thought or are silent observers.

In all her works, Kroiss captures and describes the moods of her subjects.

Light and shadow emphasise the movements and simultaneously create an abstract element, since the figures do not cast their own shadows. Poetic titles of the works, imbued with fine humour, reflect the importance of the depicted persons for the artist.

For the viewer, it is an intense experience: the play of light and shadow gives the portrayed grace and liveliness and invites you to immerse yourself in Kroiss' artistic world.
