Music and clubs in East and West Berlin. A conversation with insiders of the scene, moderated by radio journalist and author Marion Brasch.
In West Berlin, clubs like the “Dschungel” and the “SO36” were the hotspots for punk, new wave and electronic music. In the East, the alternative music scene moved to Treptow to the youth club “Gérard Philipe”, to the “Kahn” or to backyards, occupied apartments and churches.
Marion Brasch talks to Henryk Gericke, himself a musician and part of the East Berlin subculture, and Heiko Hoffmann, a long-time music journalist and insider of the West Berlin club scene, about the club cultures in East and West.
How did the political conditions of state control in the East and subcultural freedom in the West shape musical creativity?
And how did connections between the scenes emerge despite the Wall?
A journey through the beats of the divided city!
