Film & Talk #2030 – Season 14

With her brutally direct images of sex, drugs and violence, New York photographer Nan Goldin became a star in the art world. Her life was profoundly changed in 2014 when her doctor prescribed the painkiller Oxycontin after an operation - Goldin was addicted to the opioid for three years.

After recovering from her addiction, she took up the fight against the Sackler pharmaceutical dynasty, which sold Oxycontin. The billionaire family is one of the world's largest patrons of the arts. As an activist, Nan Goldin made sure that major museums such as the Louvre no longer accepted donations from the Sacklers.

Oscar®-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras (“Citizenfour”) created an impressive portrait of the artist Nan Goldin. In her film, which won the Golden Lion in Venice, she skilfully interweaves the personal and the political, turning it into a cinematic masterpiece. The result is at the same time a moving family story, an inspiring artist's biography and a fascinating portrait of a courageous activist.
