Curator's tour: Exit Paradise - The Miettinen Collection

Entitled Exit Paradise, the exhibition brings together around 130 works by more than 50 artists from four continents. Inspired by the biblical motif of the expulsion from paradise, the show explores the tension between physicality and alienation, eroticism and revolt, naturalness and manipulation. The twelve themed stations in the exhibition impressively illustrate how images of the body emancipate themselves from classical ideals of beauty and are used by the avant-gardes as a field of experimentation for aesthetic and political discourse, reflecting the social upheavals of their time.


While classical representations of physicality usually refer to religious or secular ideals, the selected works in the Miettinen Collection show fragmented, pop and queer body images that refer to changing role models and body concepts, group affiliations and gender attributions.


'Exit Paradise' conveys the changing understanding of corporeality in its representations and rituals, identity discourses and somatic narratives, as taken up and interpreted by artists of the 20th and 21st centuries in a variety of ways.
