© visitBerlin Akademie der Wissenschaften Akademie der Wissenschaften Akademie der Wissenschaften 78 Nobel Prize laureates emboss its history. Since its founding, the Berliner Akademie der Wissenschaften enjoys world-wide renown. It was a completely new approach with which Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz founded the “Königlich-Preußische Akademie der Wissenschaften” in 1700 in Berlin. While the “Royal Society” in London or the “Académie des sciences“ in Paris limited themselves to specific scientific fields, the Berliner Akademie was supposed to be all encompassing and bring together the natural sciences and humanities. © visitBerlin Petriplatz Petriplatz Petriplatz Petriplatz is located between Breite Straße and Gertraudenstraße and was once the historical centre of Cölln, medieval Berlin's sister city. The square is named after St Peter, the patron saint of the fishing folk who lived on nearby Fischerinsel. Today, there's almost nothing left of the once-thriving business and residential centre. But excavations started in 2007 have begun to unearth the foundations of the old St Peter's church, the Latin school, the remains of Cölln's town hall, medieval town houses and tombs. © visitBerlin Ribbeck-Haus Ribbeck-Haus Ribbeck-Haus Temporarily closed. - The Ribbeck-Haus did not receive its name from the noble Brandenburg family immortalized in literature by Theodor Fontane, as one might easily surmise. Instead, it was commissioned in 1624 by Privy Counsellor Hans Georg von Ribbeck. The project involved merging two older gabled houses into a single structure with the slope of the roof and the eaves facing the street (known in German as a "Traufenhaus"). The location was well chosen as Breite Straße was a distinguished residential area for wealthy merchants and prominent citizens of the day.
