The Martin Gropius Bau with its 640,000 guests is one the five most visited exhibition houses in Berlin. Opened in 1881 as the Royal Art Museum, the renaissance style building was badly damaged by bombing raids near the end of the Second World War. It was listed as a historic building in 1965 and rebuilt in 1981. Every year, some 15 - 20 contemporary exhibitions are held in the Martin Gropius Bau, turning out to become big attractions for visitors time after time.
